Please click here for the September 7, 2012 China earthquake; 5.6 Magnitude Quake Hit China – Photos
Another natural disaster happened today.
A 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Qinghai in China at 7:49 am local time (7:49 pm ET Tuesday).
The epicenter was about 150 miles (240 kilometer) northwest of Qamdo, Tibet.
There were strong aftershocks of magnitude 5.2 and 5.3 about half an hour of the quake.
Most houses were made of wood with earthen walls in the area.
A lot of houses and other buildings collapsed.
At least 300 people were killed and 8000 were injured.
Many others were still buried under the debris.
This place is in the mountains and far from the big cities.
So there are not much heavy machines and medical equipments.
In 2008 a 7.9 earth quake hit neighboring Sichuan province.
About 90,000 were killed or missing in that earthquake.
In 2010, strong earthquakes hit Haiti, Chile,Mexico and Indonesia .
When I first wrote this post this morning, there was only one person reported killed.
Aftermath Of Earthquake in Chile
A very strong 8.8 earthquake hit central Chile early Saturday.
This is the 7th strongest earthquake in the world.
The president of Chile, President Michelle Bachelet said at least two million people were affected and 214 were killed.
The earthquake damaged buildings, roads and bridges.
Houses, offices, hospitals and highways were damaged.
Highway overpasses collapsed on the road and cars were thrown away.
The president declared ‘areas of catastrophe’.
A town named Chillan that was destroyed in the 1939 earthquake is one of the most effected.
Santiago lost electricity, water and telephone services.
Santiago is the capital of Chile.
The Santiago airport is shut down for at least the next 24 hours.
Tsunami waves were reported in the countries around the Pacific Ocean.
Boats were thrown ashore, buildings were damaged and some areas were flooded.
In Talcahuano, Chile the waves were as high as 7.7 feet.
On the island of Juan Fernando the tsunami waves killed 3 people and 10 were missing.
Tsunami activities is reported as far as in Tasmania, Australia.
CNN reported a 9 feet high tsunami may hit Japan and tens of thousands of people has been evacuated.
There have been lots of powerful aftershocks; one with a magnitude of 6.9.
In Argentina a 6.3 magnitude quake killed 2 people in separate towns.
There have been lots and lots of damage in Concepcion.
Any way things are not as bad as the aftermath of the 7.0 Haiti earthquake.
I am very sorry for the victims in this natural disaster.
I think we should build high quality buildings with air bags to protect the buildings and people during earthquake.
Haiti Was Hit By A Strong Aftershock
A 5.9 magnitude aftershock hit Haiti at 6.03 a.m. ET on Wednesday morning, about 35 miles (60 kilometers) west-southwest of Port-au-Prince.
ET means Eastern Time.
This is the strongest aftershock after the 7.0 earthquake on 12 January 2010.
Aftershocks are earthquakes that happen after the first earthquake.
People screamed and ran to the streets because they are scared that the buildings will fall on them.
It is very dangerous because the buildings are not strong after the 7.0 earthquake hit them.
The rubble from the damaged buildings can fall on people’s head.
The damaged buildings can also collapse and hurt more people.
Maybe more people are injured and more buildings are damaged and more rubble block the streets.
