According to a Facebook post from a top Ukrainian official, as it flew at about 10,000 meters (nearly 33,000 feet) on the way from Amsterdam to Malaysia.
CNN reported that a senior U.S. official said, a radar system saw a surface-to-air missile system turn on and track an aircraft right before the plane went down.
The senior U.S. official also said that a second system saw a heat signature at the time the airliner was hit.

Risk verses dollars, were the passengers told that the plane would fly over a war zone? All air liners are doing the same in many areas, maybe they will change policies after this but they haven’t since the plane shot down in the middle east several years ago, so I wont hold my breath for a change. I can not blame the west Ukraine for shooting planes down when the US is supplying war planes to bomb and make air strikes on them, US is supplying satellite images to west Ukraine and Russia is supplying east Ukraine. Reports I have seen say that Putins plane was in that area about the same time, makes one wonder if his plane may have been the target, may be the west was trying to eliminate him. This is getting personal and I hope tempers will not over ride logic starting a war between west and Russia, China, Iran, North Korea.
Dear Richard,
I read about the Putin’s plane too. We may not know what really happened since I also read that they may ‘edit’ the information in the black box.
War is cruel and I agree with you that hopefully this won’t turn into another war.
Who was the idiot that scheduled flights over a war zone, had to be deliberately done. The Eastern Ukrainian forces will shoot down any planes including their own if not advised not too. This has to be done deliberately may be taken pictures of area for western Ukraine war effort.
Dear Richard,
It’s nice to hear from you again. This is a tragedy. War is cruel. MH17’s flight plan was approved by Eurocontrol, who are solely responsible for determining civil aircraft flight paths over European airspace. Malaysia Airlines MH17 did not fly into, or request to fly into the Crimean peninsula that the International Civil Aviation Organization identified as risky. In fact Air India and Singapore Airlines flew through the same route at about the same time as MH17. And lots of other commercial airlines use this route to fly to Asia from Europe.
