Michael Schumacher, the retired seven-time Formula One champion is in a critical condition Monday after undergoing brain surgery following a skiing accident in the French Alps.
In a brief statement, the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire hospital in the southeastern French city of Grenoble said that Michael Schumacher is “suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation” and that, “he remains in a critical condition.”
It was reported that he was skiing in the Meribel resort with his 14 year old son when he fell and his head hit a rock.
He was first airlifted to a local hospital but an hour later he was rushed to the better-equipped Grenoble facility.
A surgeon and brain specialist from Paris was rushed in to oversee his treatment.
Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
I am very sad about Michael Schumacher’s condition and hope that he will recover very soon.
