The snow spikes above, called penitentes, are naturally formed. They can occur anywhere there’s snow and sun but are seen most often high in the mountains. Penitentes are made when the sun hits a snow field and causes the snow to transform directly to vapor, skipping the liquid stage. Image by DreamX.
