A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, about 10 miles (15 km) South East of Port-au-Prince just before 5 pm.
Haiti is one of the Caribbean countries.
CNN said it is a ‘catastrophe of major proportions’.
It means like a very big disaster.
CNN reported bodies in the streets of Port-au-Prince.
Lots of people were injured and dead.
They still can’t count the number of the dead and wounded yet.
The earthquake caused heavy damage to the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Lots of buildings and houses were damage and collapsed.

Power lines were knocked down so there is no electricity on Tuesday evening.
The Associated Press reported that a hospital collapsed.
The President’s residence is also damaged by the earthquake.
In Port-au-Prince lots of houses were built on the steep hillsides.
So when there is an earthquake the houses can fall onto other houses down the hill.

Houses on the hillside in Port-au-Prince. Are these houses still there?
I am very sad because lots of people in Haiti lost their houses and family.
There had been lots of earthquakes in January 2010.
